Taguig City, Philippines — SNSU President Dr. Gregorio Z. Gamboa Jr. signed the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between Surigao del Norte State University (SNSU), Department of Science and Technology Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) and DOST- Regional Office Caraga established a university-based technology business incubator (TBI) in SNSU to be known DOST-SNSU WAVES TBI during the 6th TBI Summit on November 16, 2022 at the Blue Leaf Events Pavilion, Taguig City as part of this year’s Philippine Startup Week.
Under the Higher Education Institution Readiness for Innovation and Technopreneurship (HEIRIT) Program, DOST-PCIEERD led a rigorous and competitive selection process. In addition, DOST-SNSU WAVES TBI ranked highly among the 27 higher education institutions (HEIs) from all over the Philippines that pitched their proposals and passed the technical panel and governing council evaluation. Some of the 15 HEIs that qualified for funding under Track 1 of the said program is the University of the Philippines-Baguio, De La Salle- College of Saint Benilde, MSU Gensan, University of Immaculate Concepcion, and Ateneo de Manila University.

DOST-SNSU WAVES TBI
DOST-SNSU WAVES TBI is formed to catalyze the regional entrepreneurial ecosystem in Caraga Region by aligning university researches, development projects, and other university initiatives to Caraga’s Fishery, Agro-Forestry, Mineral, and Ecotourism (FAME) agenda. Likewise, the center is created to boost Caraga’s holistic development and competitiveness. It banners Metals and Engineering in support of the flourishing Tourism Industry in the region.
Leading the DOST-SNSU WAVES is TBI Manager Dr. Arvin Mag-usara, ITSO Director Dr. Adriano Patac, Jr., Marketing and Communications Lead Ms. Stephinejane Musico, Community Builders Ms. Milcah Cadavis and Ms. Princes Grace Retita, and Industry Partner Engr. Lyndon Cubillan. The team of six started crafting the proposal in February and went through hybrid TBI-related mentorships from business incubators and accelerators alike, such as UP-Diliman’s UPSCALE Innovation Hub, UP-Mindanao’s UPGRADE TBI, DLSU’s Animolabs and Malaysia’s E3Hubs. Through this 2-year funding, the DOST-SNSU WAVES TBI will be able to develop co-working spaces for startups, train entrepreneurs with technology-related products and services, assist entrepreneurs in networking, marketing, and sourcing funds, and developing other business-related competencies.
